Target's key Jan. revenue metric tops Wall Street

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? Discount retailer Target Corp. said Thursday that a key revenue measure rose 3.1 percent in January as shoppers bought holiday clearance merchandise.

The gain topped Wall Street expectations, and Target shares edged up 31 cents to $63 in premarket trading.

Gregg Steinhafel, chairman, president and CEO of Target, said its customers "continue to shop with discipline in the face of a slow economic recovery and new pressures, including recent payroll tax increases."

As a result, he said Target remains "focused on providing unbeatable value combined with a superior guest experience in both our stores and digital channels."

Analysts had expected a 1.7 percent increase for the four weeks ended Jan. 26, according to Thomson Reuters.

The figure is based on revenue at stores opened at least a year and is considered an indicator of a retailer's health because it excludes results from stores recently opened or closed.

For the quarter to date, revenue at stores open at least a year rose 0.4 percent.. The figure is up 2.7 percent for the year to date.

Total revenue for the five weeks ended Feb. 2 were $5.97 billion, up 29.6 percent from a year ago.

For the quarter to date, total revenue was up 6.8 percent to $22.37 billion. For the year to date, revenue rose 5.1 percent to $71.96 billion.

Getting the Science Right in the Black Press - Making Headway with @EbonyMag

Why did I come so hard and so fast?

1. It was 5:30 in the morning and I wasn?t falling asleep anytime soon, and had my tethers raised.

2. I figured I?d make my points on Twitter ? mainly correcting the science of the narrative and making a case for why reporting science accurately in the Black Press to Black audiences is imperative.

3. I didn?t expect Ebony Magazine to actually respond.

This last point I really want to expand on. You see, it is a very frustrating thing being a minority scientist. And believe it or not, the folk who I (and many others like me) spend the most time fussing and fighting with are people from our own communities who look like us.? That has been my experience with ?Old-school Black organizations? like Ebony/Jet Magazine, The Church, Civic Organizations, and Social Justice/Civil Rights Organizations.? As important as they have been and are for representing people of color and serving the African-American community, they haven?t always been the most progressive when it comes to listening to Generation X/Y-ers.? They just haven?t. And science education and medical research has been one of those sticky widget conversations that has felt like a battle to me. So, I came puffed out, with my armaments on and ready to hold fast.

In the end, headway was made ? quickly, too ? before breakfast. And Science won! It?s just a start, but maybe it will be enough to get the editors and folks in the back room to thinking:

  • Hey, maybe we should run parallel science pieces that explain the topics we?re reporting! A side-by-side box explaining how Depo-Provera works would have been a sweet piece of subtle health science news for this article. (low-hanging fruit) OR

A scientist can dream, can? she?

(AP) ? Riding a U.S. housing recovery and a booming stock market, Boise Cascade, a maker of plywood and other building materials, jumped 25 percent in its market debut Wednesday.

It's the latest solid first-day gain for an IPO, boding well for other companies that want to raise money by going public. Cruise company Norwegian Cruise Line rose 30 percent in its Jan. 18 debut, and has kept rising. Child care provider Bright Horizons gained 27 percent on Jan. 25. Homebuilder Tri Pointe added 12 percent on Jan. 31.

"It's a very healthy IPO market," said Francis Gaskins, president of researcher IPOdesktop. "The lake is rising in terms of the stock market and that brings in IPOs, and in that context, IPOs generally do quite well."

The Dow Jones industrial average, a stock market bellwether, had closed above 14,000 on Friday for the first time since the financial crisis.

When Wall Street rolls out the red carpet for companies like Boise Cascade Co. and others looking to tap the markets for money, it can have a ripple effect across the economy. Selling shares gives companies funds that they can use to grow their business and add more employees.

That path has been a difficult one since the financial crisis broke in 2007, however. Wild swings in stock market prices made investors and companies more nervous about going public, weighing on deal volume. Still, a handful of big debuts, such as the Facebook Inc. IPO last May and General Motors Co.'s return to the public markets in 2010, helped put a gloss on the market and raised the total dollar value of IPOs.

So far this year, 13 companies have raised $5.5 billion in U.S. initial public offerings of stock, according to data provider Dealogic. That's up sixfold from $909 million raised by eight companies in the same stretch last year. In all of 2012, 145 IPOs raised $47.2 billion, though IPOs all but dried up late in the year as concern over the "fiscal cliff" mounted. Lawmakers' deal over taxes at the beginning of January averted the steep tax increases and spending cuts that would have kicked in, helping rally the stock market and unthaw the IPO market.

A burst of companies went public last month ? it was the biggest January, by amount of money raised, on record dating back to 1993, said data provider Dealogic. But almost half that money came from the IPO of Zoetis, Pfizer's animal health business. It raised almost $2.6 billion in the largest IPO since Facebook's $16 billion debut.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. raised $514 million, while TRI Pointe Homes LLC gained $268 million in its IPO and Bright Horizons Family Solutions LLC $222 million.

Investors may have been particularly drawn to Boise Cascade and TRI Pointe as a way to bet on the housing recovery. Home sales and prices have routinely been setting multiyear highs as they come back from the real estate collapse, fueled by improvements in the job market and the overall economy, coupled with low interest rates.

Shares in the 13 biggest publicly traded U.S. builders remain well off their peak prices from 2005, during the housing boom. Still, their stocks, on average, more than doubled in 2012.

That supports demand for real estate-related IPOs, Gaskins said.

And more is likely coming. Another homebuilder, Taylor Morrison Home Corp., filed documents for an initial public offering in December. The Scottsdale, Ariz., company hopes to raise up to $250 million.

Boise Cascade isn't a homebuilder itself. Originally formed in 1913, Boise Cascade makes plywood and other wood products and building materials, supplying about 4,500 wholesalers, home improvement centers, retail lumberyards and other customers. It bought office supply chain OfficeMax in 2003. That company then sold its paper and wood products division to Madison Dearborn Partners LLC. The private equity firm took Boise Cascade to market and still owns about 70 percent of the Boise, Idaho, company after the IPO. Office supply chain OfficeMax Inc. also kept a 20 percent stake.

Boise Cascade raised $247.1 million in its IPO, which was more than it expected, from selling 11.8 million shares for $21 each. It had initially set a price range of $16 to $18, and raised that to $18 to $20 on Tuesday in a signal of healthy demand. Boise Cascade plans to use $25 million to repay debt and the rest for general corporate purposes.

Trading under the "BCC" ticker symbol on the New York Stock Exchange, Boise Cascade's stock gained $5.15 to close at $26.15.

Four questions that will be answered by UFC 156

UFC 156 is the UFC's annual Super Bowl weekend card, and as usual, it's a big one. A former champion will drop down to try to win a belt in a new weight class, a Strikeforce champion will try to win a shot at the UFC heavyweight belt, and these questions will be answered.

What have the layoff and injuries done to Jose Aldo? By the time he walks into the cage on Saturday night, it will have been 385 days between Aldo's fights. He had several injuries and had bouts canceled twice. It's hard to say if we'll see the invincible Aldo who fought Chad Mendes last January.

How does the new weight class suit Frankie Edgar? Since starting as a lightweight, Edgar has had doubters because he was on the small side for 155 lbs. It worked for him, as he did win and defend the UFC lightweight championship. Now that he's lost it, he's trying again for the belt at 145 lbs. Will the new weight class fit him even better than lightweight did?

Did Alistair Overeem look past Antonio Silva? At the pre-fight press conference, Overeem called the bout with Silva a warm-up fight.

"Obviously I've not fought for 13 months, so it's going to be a good test for me," Overeem said. "I should not overlook 'Bigfoot' Silva, but if I look at my training and what I do to my sparring partners, I should not make 'Bigfoot' Silva more than he is. He should not be a problem, but that's why it's a warm-up fight."

That's dangerous ground to tread, as looking past the man who is about to punch you makes it lightly you'll get knocked out. Overeem should beat Silva, but the one way he can lose is to not take Silva seriously.

Can Jon Fitch use his wrestling to neutralize Demian Maia? You may not like to watch Fitch's matches. You may have used the words "lay and pray." But you cannot deny Fitch's ability to use his wrestling to hold off opponent's strengths. This time, he'll be using it against Maia, whose submissions and jiu-jitsu are tough to beat. This is Fitch's chance to show he can hold off even the best ground games.

What are you most looking forward to for UFC 156 -- or are you not looking forward to it at all? Speak up in the comments, Facebook or Twitter.
