Stop the presses!
In the latest developments in the ongoing controversy surrounding jerky treats for dogs produced in China, Nestle Petcare Company of St. Louis, Mo., and its wholly owned subsidiary Waggin' Train just announced a voluntary nationwide recall of Waggin' Train and Canyon Creek Ranch dog treats from the U.S. market until further notice.
Mere moments after hearing about this, I learned from pet food safety advocate Susan Thixton of Truth About Pet Food fame that Milo's Kitchen also recalled its Chicken Jerky and Chicken Grillers home-style dog treats.
The companies decided to take this action after learning that the New York State Department of Agriculture had found trace amounts of antibiotic residue in these treats.
While these particular antibiotics are approved for use in poultry in China (where the treats are produced) and other European Union countries, they are not approved for use in the U.S.The irony of all this is that pet parents and pet food activists have been trying to get these treats banned for years, following numerous complaints about dogs allegedly being sickened or dying after ingesting these and other dog jerky treats made in China.
Another irony is that I was smack in the middle of writing a major feature article about this, the focal point of which is a recent conference call with the FDA regarding dog jerky treats from China conducted by Susan and fellow pet food safety advocate Mollie Morrissette, author of the blog Poisoned Pets.
While news reports claim that these recalls apparently are not associated with the FDA's ongoing investigation, I can't help but wonder if this some kind of karmic coincidence? I dunno'. But the plot thickens. Stay tuned for more updates and my forthcoming feature story, which just got a heck of a lot more complicated!
