Vietnam jails 8th democracy activist in a month (AP)

HANOI, Vietnam ? A judge says a Vietnamese pro-democracy activist has been sentenced to four years in prison for calling for an end to Communist rule. Lu Van Bay is the eighth dissident to be jailed in less than a month as part of a major crackdown.

Presiding Judge Do Minh Hung says Bay was convicted of spreading propaganda against the state at Monday's half-day trial in the southern province of Kien Giang. He was also given three years of house arrest after serving out his sentence.

The 59-year-old Bay was accused of posting more than 10 articles on overseas Vietnamese websites between 2007 until his arrest in March this year. The writings called for a multiparty system to replace Vietnam's one-party rule.

The judge said Bay confessed and asked for leniency.
